Who’s Behind the Brand:

JQ Ramos has been in the coffee industry for 6 years, getting her start from Coffee Club Cafe, a social enterprise cafe she created with equally caffeinated friends in their high school. After realizing that coffees don’t all taste the same, she started a casual WordPress blog and Instagram, The Coffee Effect, to document her explorations, experiences, and learnings of coffee and the growing third wave movement in Nashville.

While a part of The Program on Urban Studies at Stanford University, she started working at Starbucks, learning all she could about operations as a shift supervisor and all about coffee as a coffee master. She also interned for Kalsada Coffee in the Philippines, learning about Manila cafe culture, developing a social media strategy, and visiting their farms they partnered with in Benguet. 

After graduating, she moved to New York City to open the fourth Starbucks Roastery as an Operations Lead. She then decided to barista again and has since worked at various independent cafes in New York City and Nashville to improve her skills in barista craft, mixology, and hospitality. 

She recently passed Coffee Quality Institute’s Cupping Essentials course at The Academy of Coffee Excellence, learning Specialty Coffee Association’s cupping protocol, triangulation, and green coffee sorting.
